THREE THINGS WILL LAST FOREVER—FAITH, HOPE, AND LOVE—AND THE GREATEST OF THESE IS LOVE.

Courage to Begin Again

Have you ever had a time in life when you wanted a "do over"?  Maybe you made a wrong job decision, did or said something you regretted, or held back on your goals.  We all have times in our life we wish we could go back and do again.  Recently I was reading an article on Philip Rivers.  He was talking to a graduating class, and had a phrase I thought was worth sharing.

"I want to share a Latin phrase with you that is very special to me, and that I think we all can and should apply to our everyday lives. Nunc Coepi. Now I begin. In our prayer, in our habits, in our relationships, in our profession. It is applicable to everything. Nunc Coepi (Now I begin). Whether you made a bad grade or didn’t do so well on a project. You must begin again. When I have a bad play or a good play, whether I throw a touchdown or an interception, I must begin again.  But this is ongoing. You begin again, and again and again. You never give up. Your time on earth will end, and you will be remembered for something. How do you want to be remembered?”

I thought what a great phrase.  Life is all about beginning again. This is what makes God's love for us so special.  Lamentations 3:22 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.".  I love the thought that the Lord "begins again" with us each morning.  No matter how we messed up the day before, he is always willing to begin again.  I wonder how our marriages, friendships, and relationships, would benefit if we applied this principle?

Let’s look at some specific peole in the Bible who were allowed to begin again.

Moses- killed a man, ran away, and argued with God he was not the one to lead the Israelites.  Yet, Moses became one of the greatest leaders of the Israelites.

Saul who became Paul-was literally killing Christians, yet God put a fire in his heart to win souls for the Lord. Proof of this is when Paul stated, “But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.” Acts 20:24

Peter desperately wanted to do the right thing, but was found denying Christ not once, but three times.  Did God banish him, or hold a grudge?  Of course not, he loved him unconditionally and allowed the church to be built upon him. “Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means 'rock'), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.” Mathew 16:18

I just wonder if anyone needs to know, besides me today, that life is about “beginning again”.  Satan would like nothing better than for Christians to live in defeat because they have failed in a certain area.  The point is personal mistakes or failures can either drive us one of two ways- defeat or determination.  Is there something you need to “Nunc Coepi” begin again?  Maybe it is your marriage. You may just need a “do over” for either you or your spouse to start over on a clean slate.  Maybe it is a relationship that has been strained because of words that were said in haste.  Maybe it is your relationship with God because you have drifted away.  The question is not if God will allow us to begin again, but if we are willing?  I urge you today to have the courage in whatever place you find yourself to accept God's mercy, and simply begin again.

Divide and Conquer-Satan's way

Often times in life we get caught up in the things we are doing.  We of course want everything to be perfect, but forget whom we are doing it for at times.  No one would have a job if it were not for one thing-people.  People can come in all shapes and sizes, with all kinds of personalities.  Sometimes when we get so caught up in our work, we loose sight of this detail.  When we are busy planning things, we can also get caught up in “I” ownership.  Recently our church hosted a mother’s day breakfast.  I decorated the tables; two ladies helped with the food, a few helped fold flowers, and one lady made a lovely centerpiece.  The point is that it would be easy to think in my mind “I” did this, or “I” pulled this all together.  When the real truth is that I would have had a terrible breakfast, especially without the ladies who prepared the food.  It is a dangerous mentality when you start using the word “I” all the time, believing it is only you that can get things done.  When our mind turns to this type of thinking God would call it Pride.  Pride can come in all kinds of areas in our life, and we are all guilty of it at some point.  God despises pride.  The Bible says, “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” Proverbs 16:18

Nebuchadnezzar was a very powerful king.  His kingdom was described as "Babylon, too, lies in a plain; and the circuit of its wall is three hundred and eighty-five stadia. The thickness of its wall is thirty-two feet; the height thereof between the towers is fifty cubits;9 that of the towers is sixty cubits (90 ft); and the passage on top of the wall is such that four-horse chariots can easily pass one another; and it is on this account that this and the hanging garden are called one of the Seven Wonders of the World. " Strabo Geography Book XVI, Chapter 1.   Nebuchadnezzar was very much into how things looked, and how people perceived his kingdom.  He was in-fact a very prideful King.

Daniel 3:1 King Nebuchadnezzar made an image of gold, sixty cubits high (90 ft) and six cubits wide,[a] and set it up on the plain of Dura in the province of Babylon.  4 Then the herald loudly proclaimed, “Nations and peoples of every language, this is what you are commanded to do: 5 As soon as you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe and all kinds of music, you must fall down and worship the image of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up.

Now in our minds we are probably thinking we are not anything like Nebuchadnezzar because we would never want a statue built of us.  We may never build a golden image, but we do exalt ourselves above others.  In James 4:1 What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight.  Basically James says it is the pride of trying to satisfy our selves that causes strife.

Another example of his pride is in verses 16-20 Nebuchadnezzar is enraged because everyone is not bowing down to his image.  Once again in these verses we see how Nebuchadnezzar was prideful because his expectations were not being met.  His anger rose to a new level when he said, “heat the furnace seven times hotter”.  He was so enraged because these men had not obeyed his demands, but instead followed what God called them to do.

The final straw is in Daniel 4:29 is “Twelve months later, as the king was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, 30 he said, “Is not this the great Babylon I have built as the royal residence, by my mighty power and for the glory of my majesty?” 31 Even as the words were on his lips, a voice came from heaven, “This is what is decreed for you, King Nebuchadnezzar: Your royal authority has been taken from you. 32 You will be driven away from people and will live with the wild animals; you will eat grass like the ox. Seven times will pass by for you until you acknowledge that the Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes.”

God had enough of his arrogant pride, and took him down to the lowest point.  In a few minutes he went from the most powerful man, to eating grass like the animals.  I fully believe that God will not allow us to operate in the “I” mode for long periods, without serious consequences.  These consequences may only affect us, but more than likely will have an impact on those around us. Nebuchadnezzar had been the King for so long he came to believe it was he that was in charge, when in reality God was orchestrating everything for his glory, not Nebuchadnezzar.

Recently one of my closest mentors told me to remember I would only answer for my actions.  I could not change or control what anyone else said or believed. “I tell you that on the day of judgment people will have to account for every careless word they speak.” Mathew 12:36.  He also said never forget to serve with a spirit of community, not what you want, but what God wants. As I search my own life for anything that may hinder me in my service for God, the verse in Colossians 3 came to mind “17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus (my emphasis in bold), giving thanks to God the Father through him.  I pray the Lord will always help me serve with a spirit of community and never with an “I” mentality.  I pray that God will help me always lean on him for guidance, when I am at a lost for understanding the situation.  God states clearly in his word that Pride leads to division, and division leads to defeat. Divide and conquer strategy--in this strategy, one power breaks another power into smaller, more manageable pieces, and then takes control of those pieces one by one.  Isn’t this a perfect reminder of how Satan would like nothing more than to divide and conquer God’s people?  I pray that we will do everything in our power to stay united for one God and one Kingdom, even if it means swallowing a little pride.

Worthless Religion

As I write to you today I am in the book of James.  This is the second time in a year I have made my way through the book of James.  It can be an extremely difficult book to study, but so needed for everyday life. I think James would have been one of my favorite preachers.  He simply tells you how it is, and then tells you exactly what to do.  Today I would like to challenge you with a bold statement " if we can't control our attitude and tongue- our religion is worthless".  You may not agree, but let's look at a few things James has to say.

James 3:9- 9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. 11 Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? 12 My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.

When it refers to cursing it simple means condemning another person in some manner. If you notice he says "who are created in God's likeness".  So basically when you condemn someone you are in essence condemning Christ's creation.  Now when we think about it in this light it should cause us to cringe. He goes on to say can both fresh and salt water flow from the same spring?  The answer is of course not, however two different speeches flow freely from our mouths almost daily.  In one moment we are talking about God's mercy and grace, then in the next we demean someone which expends neither mercy or grace.  What if an obese person tried to tell you how to lose weight, or a current smoker was trying to convince you why you should stop smoking, or a drug addict was trying to tell you how to quit taking drugs, would you listen?  What if a pastor was teaching on forgiveness, and you knew he had not forgiven someone?  What if a Dr. wanted to administer a drug to you, but refused to give it to his family?  Would you take it?  What would be your response?  You would probably not be inclined to listen to any of these people because they gave you no indication they were taking their own advice. The point is that if we profess Christ as Lord of our life, and repeatedly use our mouth for negative and hurtful words, we have lost our testimony for Christ.  This includes Sarcasm. I am not talking about joking with your friends sarcasm, but the derogatory tone people use when they don't like something, but won't really come out and say it.  It seems the older I get, the more I despise it.  If someone has something to say about something I am doing just shoot it to me straight. Sarcasm has become such a problem for some people. They can no longer communicate because it rolls out of their mouth without a thought of who it might hurt.  Can I just say there is nothing Christ like in sarcasm. It is simply people satisfying their self with digs at other people's expense.  What can happen over time is no one wants to communicate with these people because the effort seems pointless.  The Bible states, "where you have bitterness and anger, there you will also find disorder and every evil practice." James is describing this arrogant and bitter wisdom in its effects. The most notable thing about it is that it issues disorder. That is to say, instead of bringing people together, it drives them apart. Instead of producing peace, it produces strife.

Our body language and tone can also be a disruption in communicating Christ's love to others.  Ever heard the statement it's not what you say, but how you say it?  I have only heard it about a million times in my childhood.  However, I have seen over the years it is true.  I have watched people make others feel incompetent, or invaluable just by the condescending tone they used with them.  We never have the right, even if we are the boss, to degrade someone whether in private or public.  There is always a way to communicate without belittling someone.

What does our speech reveal about us? What kind of impact does our speech have on other people? Our words have a tremendous impact. It's important that we learn to communicate with wisdom and purity. We must keep in mind that our speech can serve as a reflection of our relationship with Christ. What if your speech for the past week was on display.  What would your speech say about you, and your relationship with Christ?  Would it say that your lips praise God, but your heart is far from Him, or that you have only allowed beneficial things for edification to escape your lips? So I tell you again, if we cannot control our tongue- our religion is worthless, because no one will listen.

I hope to make the following scriptures a memorization exercise for myself. As you will see there is a lot of scripture pertaining to the mouth, so it I know God values good, wholesome conversation.

If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless.

The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
1 Peter 3:9-11
Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. For, "Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech. He must turn from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it.

1 John 3:18
Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.

Holy Bible, New International Version

Will we always have this problem?  James 3:7 "All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man, 8 but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.". The only hope we have is in walking by the spirit. Psalm 141:3 "Set a guard over my mouth, LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips".

One of the hardest things for me in James is 3:1. "Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.  Those of us who have accepted the call to teach or preach have little room for error.
